About the Shaw Center for Women’s Health
Compassionate, Comprehensive, Contemporary Care… at each stage of life
For over 50 years, it’s been our mission to provide our patients with the highest quality medical care in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. We have carefully assembled a group of board-certified specialists whose collective expertise ranges from obstetrics and family planning through the many facets of gynecology. Our practice strategy is to provide a patient-centered medical home for women. Health and wellness services for our obstetrics patients and annual gynecology screening exams are reviewed for indications and management of chronic health conditions. When interventional procedures are needed, our wellness services are complemented by the utilization of minimally invasive surgical procedures designed to return patients to their lives with as little down-time as possible.
Today’s woman has an informed attitude toward health care. You are more aware of your body’s needs and the options that are available for your continued well-being. We are committed to providing you with the health information you need to make informed decisions. Shaw Center for Women’s Health invites you to learn more about our practice, our staff, and the services we offer. We look forward to serving your healthcare needs.
You take care of everyone else, let us take care of you.
Our History
We are a 50-year-old private group of 5 OB/GYN physicians from all areas of the country, who were individually drawn to our rural Georgia health system because of the uniqueness of the medical community and the patients that it served. The current physicians are the second and third generation of physicians in this private practice model, and we serve over 38.000 women as patients in the Southwest Georgia Region.
Our Practice
A normal practice day for us is close to 200 patient appointments. The Shaw practice employs 40 non-physician professionals and has an economic impact of $6 million per year in the local economy.
Our Georgia Families
The population health in our region is rated near the top of the list as one of the unhealthiest and non-compliant populations in the county.
1 in 4 Will have social risk factors
1 in 3 Will have a poorly managed chronic medical condition
1 in 4 will have a behavioral health need
Our Patients
The Shaw practice serves about 1200 OB patients each year. As in most rural areas of the state, 80% of the Shaw Obstetrical patients are covered by Medicaid. We would like to be able to tell you that all our Obstetrical patients are young, very healthy women who are fully engaged in their pre-natal healthcare, but that is not the case.
Our population health needs require intense risk assessments and case management resources. Georgia families have had to develop a high-risk assessment form as part of the Medicaid eligibility pregnancy notifications process that screens for Social Risk Factors, Maternal Medical History, Psycho-Neurological History, Maternal Obstetrical history, and previous High-Risk Infant Findings that provide use in their New OB appointments. However, the case management of those identified conditions is left to the local providers’ use in their New OB appointments.
