Adolescent Health

The Shaw Program for Adolescent Primary Care and Gynecology provides expert medical care to girls with primary care and female reproductive system (gynecologic) needs.

Adolescent Health, Wellness & Primary Care for Girls

Shaw Center provides expert medical care in a caring and sensitive environment. We are staffed by a team of physician specialists, experienced nurse practitioners, and administrative support, all of whom are devoted to the goal of providing patients with the highest quality health care.

Our care of young female patients is performed in a positive, healing environment, using an interdisciplinary team approach. We recognize that gynecologic problems encountered in the adolescent populations are unique to this age group and require different physician skills than those utilized with adults.

We offer a comprehensive range of services for the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of adolescents with primary care needs and gynecologic disorders including Preventive health and guidance for teens and parents, menstrual problems, endocrine (hormonal) problems, ovarian cysts and masses, birth control, adolescent pregnancy-related problems, and STD treatments.

Get the Facts about HPV

HPV will affect an estimated 75% to 80% of males and females in their lifetime. For most, HPV clears on its own. But, for others, HPV could cause cervical, vaginal, and vulvar cancers in females.

The CDC recommends routine vaccination with GARDASIL for girls ages 11 to 12 and for young women ages 13 through 26 who have not already been vaccinated. GARDASIL is the only human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine that helps protect against 4 types of HPV. In girls and young women ages 9 to 26, GARDASIL helps protect against 2 types of HPV that cause about 75% of cervical cancer cases, and 2 more types that cause 90% of genital warts cases. GARDASIL also helps protect girls and young women ages 9 to 26 against 70% of vaginal cancer cases and up to 50% of vulvar cancer cases. GARDASIL may not fully protect everyone, nor will it protect against diseases caused by other HPV types or against diseases not caused by HPV. GARDASIL does not prevent all types of cervical cancer, so it’s important for women to continue routine cervical cancer screenings.  GARDASIL is given as 3 injections over 6 months.

Connections

Adolescence marks a time of transition from childhood to adulthood and encompasses many psychological and physical milestones.  A gynecologist can serve as a trusted guide to lead a teenager from adolescence through adulthood.  Many young women have special needs and concerns about changes in their bodies.

Shaw Center for Women welcomes your adolescent daughters to our practice so we can provide the kind of one-on-one care young women want in an atmosphere that allows them to feel comfortable talking about their health and lifestyles.

Connections is an educational seminar offered by Shaw for mothers and their daughters, age 9-12.  Five mother/daughter pairs make up each group.  The objective of the group is to help moms and daughters connect and prepare for adolescence.  Usually held on a week-day evening from 6:00 – 7:30 PM, groups meet once a week for five weeks and are offered four to six times per year.  Shaw offers this group at a reduced cost as a service to the community – each mother/daughter pair pays $100 for the five-week session.

What topics are covered in this group? Healthy Communication, Self-Esteem, Relationships with family/friends, Body Image/Media Influences, Healthy Eating/Exercise, Eating Disorders/Risky Behaviors, Menarche/Menstruation, Sexuality/Brief sex education, Healthy/appropriate touch, Self-expression, Changing Roles
